My name is Nik Guthrie, I am a student at Northeastern University studying Mechanical engineering and Design. I have a passion for learning and working with my hands. When outside of the classroom I enjoy working on all kinds of projects. When I have an idea, I want to work on it and figure things out. I am always looking to learn more, explore, and get my hands dirty. While at school I work at the on campus maker space. Here I work to help people work on their projects. Additionally, I run training sessions to teach individuals how to use various equipment effectively and safely.
I have had the opportunity to work at two companies, Nyobolt and Zaiput. Most recently I spent six months as a mechanical engineer on the process team at Nyobolt’s R&D facility. My team was responsible for ensuring smooth internal running of the site. Additionally, we would also design and fabricate internal testing equipment. Here I gained hands-on experience troubleshooting systems when they went down, designing equipment to increase in-house capabilities, and conducting experiments. At my first co-op I spent seven months working on the R&D mechanical engineering team. Here I worked on a wide range of projects. I helped work on the scale up of the flagship product to go from lab scale, to production scale. I created custom tools to help increase the capacity of our production team. I conducted technical milling work which allowed for rapid internal testing for the team at large.
Outside of school and work, one of my biggest passions is running. I have completed four marathons and I am in the process of training for my fifth. Additionally, I always have side projects that I am working on. Currently, the biggest project I am working on is restoring a 1971 VW beetle.
